The Hellenikos Ichnilatis is a native scenthound of Greece specialising in hare and wild boar mainly. The breed is over 2500 years old and comes from lakonikoi/lagonikoi kynes (ancient Greek terms meaning hounds from Laconia / hare hunting dogs), a type indigenous to ancient Greece and depicted in many artifacts since ancient times. Their character, speed, stamina, nose, beautiful voice and hunting prowess were documented and praised by most classic Greek writers and poets, including Homer himself. Medium sized, robust, athletic, with a noble but not heavy head, predominately black and tan, they are very entusiastic as youngsters and take time to mature. Outgoing, vivacious, vocal, headstrong and charming, they are definately greek in temperament!
