It was a challenge for the Spanish Kennel Club to organise the European dog show this year. As the World Dog Show was held this year in South America (Rio de Janeiro) one had expected a lot of dogs from Europe to come to Barcelona as the trip to Rio would be expensive, uncomfortable (for dogs) and far away. But it was not such a big show in numbers of entries, with less then 8000.
But what a show it was! The halls were fine, with good air conditioning, plenty of room, a big central place to walk the dogs or sit a while to have a drink, clean rings with flowers and plants around and bleu carpets all over and filled with indirect light from outside. One had never the impression that it was to hot or hard to breath and all dogs felt comfortable.
The time schedule for judging was really OK and the main ring program started and ended every day within reasonable limits. I didn’t hear too many complaints from the exhibitors, and we all know that most of them do if they don’t win. This is a good sign.
Although the halls were situated in the city centre, there was plenty of parking around. Only one huge hall was reserved for the rings while in a second hall all commercial stands were arranged. This hall had also a few rings and benches areas and of course the Ring of Honour.
In the left corner of this hall a grooming competition was held, followed by a fashion show presenting the latest outfit for professional groomers.
The majority of 69 judges were Spanish (40). The foreign judges represented 11 different countries.
The exhibitors on the other hand, found their ways to Barcelona from no less then 53 different countries included 9 American and 6 Asian countries.Almost one third of the exhibitors were Spanish (2648 entries) but best represented foreign country was Italy with 1370dogs, followed by the French with 1117 dogs. All those exhibitors showed no less then 260 breeds. With such numbers it is obvious that this is really good for a European Dogshow. The best represented breeds were the Dachshounds, with 308 entries for all varieties. The very popular Golden Retrievers followed closely with 250 entries and of course the American Staffordshire Terriers were well represented with 185 dogs.
The catalogue was a little bit difficult and only in Spanish. The numbering was unusual as it started with the lowest numbers for group 1 and ended with group 10. As the there was a separate catalogue every day it was confusing as also the classes were divided up. If for example you were interested in the Terriers, you had to look in several parts of the catalogue and if you don’t understand any Spanish you are lost completely. Nowhere in the catalogue had you had any statistics either. It would also have been nice to have a presentation of the national breeds, especially for an occasion like this.
The Pressroom was located on the other side of the lane and this was very inconvenient, but on the other hand a nice and convenient photo corner was arranged for them. Unfortunately the Press Seats were situated on the long end of the main ring and this was not the most ideal angle to shoot nice photos of the dogs while moving or standing. I don’t understand this in fact. The VIP corner is always the best from point of view, while these people are chatting 90% of the time. The Press people, on the other hand, need good photos for their reports that are published all over the world and report about this big event. Think, people of the committee, think !!!
The whole show was sober but professional. There was no extravagancy, even not in the main ring, but everything was functional, and that is more important then everything else. Even the results were online the day after the show, and that is fantastic. But they were again incomplete as we still miss the results of the main ring. Anyway, we can tell that Italy won no less then 11 Final places including the 3 BIS places.
All by all, this is a show to remember, perhaps not for its glamour or glitter or spectacular entertainment, but for its professionalism and excellent show area.
