I lead a dog's life.
As a freelancer, book author, dog judge and President of the Dog Writers Assn. of America (DWAA), I manage to also fit in God, family, 3 dogs, (shhh!) a cat and travel. My husband, Ed, and I enjoy traveling for my vocation, avocation and fun.
As the author of 8 books, including a 2nd edition of Successful Dog Breeding (a DWAA Best Book), The Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World, The Perfect Match and Choosing a Dog for Dummies, I’ve also published nearly 1000 columns and articles. My works have appeared in major canine publications, such as AKC Gazette, Dogs in Canada, Dog World, Dog (and Cat) Fancy, and the New York Times. In addition to writing, I've edited books and newsletters.
I've learned that readers retain information best when they enjoy what they're reading, so I use colorful language while maintaining my focus and audience. Honors include FIDO Woman of the Year and DWAA Distinguished Service Award for extraordinary achievement and communications excellence.
Formerly an exhibitor/breeder of German Shepherd Dogs and Bearded Collies for nearly 40 years, I have always believed strongly in education. Through my articles, books and seminars, I try to help others learn about dogs.
Now a judge of Herding, Working and Miscellaneous groups, Best in Show and Juniors (and studying Sporting breeds), I continue my own education through breed studies, voracious reading and research. Assignments have been in the continental U.S., Hawaii, Finland, India, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
As the current President of DWAA, and member of Cat Writers Assn., Dogs Judges Assn., American Dog Show Judges, Senior Conformation Judges, the Bearded Collie Foundation for Health and the Bearded Collie Club of America, I've served as President, Vice President, Secretary, Board member and worker. Just don't ask me to be Treasurer. Mathematics is not my strongest asset!
