IRO helps to build up Rescue Dog Organisation in China
IRO president Dr. Zörner and rescue dog teams from Austria and Hungary
have been invited to China – presentation of European training methods –
close cooperation is intended
Although China orientates itself towards the west in the field of
economy or even leaves the west behind in this regard – it is only
starting in the area of dog training. Having a dog is very popular in
China and dog exhibitions are huge social events. But dog training and
dog sport are still in its infancy. As the population does not have a
very close relationship to dogs the “China Kennel Klub” and the CSV
(German Sheperd Dog Club) want to raise the image of dogs with Agility
as fun sport (dogs have to run through a show-jumping course similar to
those for horses) and well trained rescue dogs.
Furthermore the Chinese want to install their own rescue dog
organisation in order to be less dependent on international help and to
be on-site faster.
So the CSV (German Sheperd Dog Club) invited representatives of the IRO
(International Rescue Dog Organisation) to Bejing to get an idea how
European rescue dog teams work and train.
In the beginning of December 2007 IRO president Dr. Wolfgang Zörner
(Austria), Andreas Hauk (commandant of the dog training in Austria, one
of the most successful dog handlers) and Gábor Szábo (internationally
successful dog handler since 30 years, Hungary) boarded a scheduled
flight from Austrian Airlines to China. The experienced dogs had no
problems at all with the long-distance flight.
IRO president Zörner: „In China we showed the fundamentals and basics of
rescue dog training and of dog training in general.”
In doing so the Austrians had to improvise at times because training
devices as in Europe are not known yet: big rubbish bins were washed and
cleaned and then used as hiding place for persons in order to show how
dogs alert when they find a person. Further hiding places for “missing
persons” were spontaneously arranged with wooden sticks and big
cardboard boxes.
The representative of the German Sheperd Dog Club and of the “China
Kennel Klub” - represented by Vice-president Zhang Xingli - were impressed.
A planned next step is that Chinese dog trainers come to Austria to
receive training.
IRO president Zörner: „We want to show them how rescue dog work in
groups is done on the appropriate training ground. Moreover we will
train the Chinese together with the German and Austrian Shepherd Club so
that there will be mission ready dogs in the near future.”
