Both the autumn edition or last year and the spring of this year were losing slightly in entry numbers but this seems to have stopped again. Here’s another record, 4278 entries for the autumn edition! The dogs came from no less than 25 different countries and 244 breeds could be seen on both days. As usual the composition of the judging panel is spectacular too, 39 were officiating and the represented 19 countries.

It’s always a pleasure to go through the splendid catalog. It learns me that France has the biggest delegation with 1327 entries. Germany follows with 840 dogs, than Belgium with 807 and the Netherlands with 581. Luxemburg had 122 entries, the same as Italy that is always well represented. For the rest I think that almost every country, from Scandinavia in the North to Hungary in the South and from the United Kingdom in the West till Russia in the East was present. There were even 2 dogs from the States and one from Israel.

If we take a look in the catalog we see that all the judges were well chosen again as they were very busy having lots of dogs to judge. On Saturday Groups 1, 5, 6, 8 and 9 were on term, good for 2283 dogs. Mr.Ivan Dimitrov, a Bulgarian judge, had 91 dogs, all shepherds. Mr.Jeff Luscot from the UK had 82 dogs to judge, 39 of them Beaucerons and 30 Czech Wolfhounds. Mrs. Anna Brankovic from Serbia, had 71 dogs and scored also very well on Sunday when she had 77. From Croatia there was Mrs.Jadranka Smojver-Selimovic who judged shepherd breeds on Sunday, ending up with 84. Mrs.Ruth Wagner from Luxemburg had no less than 96 entries and even more remarkable was the fact that 41 of the were White Swiss Shepherds, a breed that becomes very popular lately. She judged on Saturday only. Another well appreciated Luxemburg judge is Mr.Paul Jentgen. On Saturday he was able to have the day record with 111 dogs to judge. On Sunday he was not so busy, but still, with 63 dogs… he has the second best total entry of the show! Mrs.Chantal Charlot from France was invited on Saturday only to judge Labradors (61!), Curlies and Nova Scotias ending up with 79 dogs. Mrs.Elisabeth Rhodin from Sweden did even better with 85 dogs, her 81 Goldens were responsible for this. On Sunday she had 43 Dachshunds. Mrs.Marie-Josee Melchior, also from Luxemburg, and also popular, had 70 English Cocker Spaniels bringing her total up to 92. With 77 Sighthounds on Sunday she ends up on the 3rd place overall with 169 dogs. The record, however, was for Maja Korosec from Slovenia. If this has to do with the upcoming European Show in Slovenia is the question. She has been busy both days. On Saturday she judged Bichons and the Cotons and had 96. On Sunday she judged Terriers (including 48 Yorkshires) and with 86 it results in a total number of 182 entries.Stelios Makaritis from Greece, Best In Show judge, had 83 dogs on Saturday and 84 on Sunday, including 49 Scottish Terriers. The most numerous breed, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were divided between Tracy Jakson who had the males and Diane Fry. 61 And 59 were the respective numbers for both British ladies. Mr.Jean Francois Vanaken from Belgium judged the French Bulldogs only during this show but with 89 specimen he knew how to spend his day. Mr. Laurent Heinesche from Luxemburg and Mrs.Olga Delejsova from the Czech Republic had divided the Poodles. The Large ones (89) were for Mr.Heinesche and the small ones for Mrs. Delejsova who had the remaining 75.

On Sunday we had the remaining groups and again some spectacular figures. Mr.Peter Van Montfoort from the Netherlands was invited to judge the Great Danes and this resulted in an entry of 73. Mr.José Garcia Abad from Spain judged the Newfoundlanders and did even better with 81. The English Bulldogs were assigned to Mr.Theo Van Der horst from the Netherlands and with 68, they were well presented. Lars Adeheimer from Sweden had Terriers on his list, 91 to be more exact. Mr.Ortlieb Lothary and Karl Hettich, both from Germany came to help to handle the other popular Terrier breeds. Mr.Hettich took the 80 American Staffordshire Terriers for his account, while the Bull Terriers Standard, Miniatures and Staffordshire Bulls were for Mr.Lothary. With 52, 13 and 48 respectively he ended up with 113 in total and ended this way with the best one-day record of the show. Another Slovenian Judge, Mrs.Olga Sinko Kuprianova, judged all the wire haired Dachshunds. This was good for no less than 84 dogs. And this has not to do with the European Dog Show as she is not judging the breed there. For Group X, the Sighthounds, we can mention Pamela Mottershaw from the United Kingdom. She jduged 37 Afgan hounds and 31 Salukis, which is a very good entry for this breed. Mr.Jean Ducros from France was pretty busy too with his 79 entries. Especially the Piccolo Levriero Italiano were very well represented with 24 specimen.

With regard to the show there is so little to talk about that I would need to split hairs if I was asked for any negative remarks and it would sound unbelievable if I would need to enumerate all the superlatives applicable to this show. That is why I’d better go immediately to BIS judging. Mr. Stelios Makaritis was granted the honor to chose between the 10 glamorous looking dogs. All the dogs are judges one by one and are asked to pull back in the pre-judging ring. The 3 winnings dogs are then asked to come back through the gate, an exciting moment. The first one to come out and take the 3rd place on the podium was the Papillon Gatchaman of Royal Blanche JP, a dog and choice of Mr. Mrs.Olga Sinko who awarded him Best of Breed from a total entry of 30. He was entered in Champions Class.Mrs.Maja Korosec made him Best of his Group. Gatchaman is a 4 year old import from Japan and is owned by Mr.Weber from Germany. He was followed by the Landseer Fabius Parcae Us Arsnouphis, also a dog, 3 years old had only 6 concurrents to beat and was entered in Champion Class too under MR. Paul Jentgen. Mr.Van Montfoort later made him Best of Group. Fabius is bred, owned and handled by C.Knippenborg from the Netherlands. The winner and Best In Show was a surprise to me as judges use to take more popular breeds to win than the Lagotto Romagnolo. But this one was a nice one with a lovely color and temperament. She listens to the name Ginger, is 3 years old and registered in the LIR studbook of Italy, where dogs with (still) incomplete pedigrees are registered. Ginger was bred by Silvano Novelli and owned by Adelmo Petturiti. I am glad that dogs with incomplete pedigrees can be so exceptionally beautifull that judges are so convinced of the qualities they see that they grant them the highest honor in a show. Ginger had to compete for Best of Breed against 12 breedmates under Marie-Josée Melchior and once more under Paul Jentgen to become Best of Group. Mr.Jentgen must have been very proud as two of his choices ended ResBIS and BIS. Congratulations to the judges

You can probably come and see Ginger next edition of this show, the Spring edition, that usually attracts almost 1000 dogs more. It will be the 82th edition and held on 26 and 27 of March. Reserve this date already, or better, go now to www.uchl.lu and add it to your favorites in order not to forget to enter your dogs in time.
