Flanders Dog Show Gent 2010, 43th edition. VOUCHER BOB /PHOTO GRATUIT BOB /GRATIS FOTO BOB: (ordering photos assistance see below article / commander des photos: voir en dessous de l'article / foto's bestellen zie onderaan artikel / bilder bestellen: lesen sie unten das artikel)

It is hard to tell what the reason is of the decrease in entries from 2070 in 2008 to 1726 this year. This show is held every two years and this year it was a very busy start of the year with a show almost every two weeks while in March and April there is no show at all in Belgium. Perhaps it was a little bit too much.

If the crisis plays also a role is not sure as it seemed not to harm the success of the other shows. But although Gent is organized only every two years, it is well known and has a good reputation. The proof is there as dogs and exhibitors from no less than 13 countries entered for the show, even as far as Lithuania, Belorussia and Sweden and from England we had 17 dogs in competition.

Gent is a big show as it is a one day show. The Flanders Expo halls are amongst the best halls in country, situated right next to the highway, with huge parkings, modern traffic connections and modern general accommodation. There is a hotel attached and the old town is easily accessible with the public transport that stops in front of the halls. At the same time in another hall a horse show was held and it was possible to buy a ticket for both events. As it I had the impression that there was certainly no more public around as usual, I doubt if this combination has had a positive effect on the number of visitors.

I always wonder how it would be if Gent would be held in two days and if the saving of renting the halls for one day less can compensate the disadvantages like finding enough people to help (ring stewards etc.), like inviting a lot more judges, the space and parking and the pressure on the judging and the main ring program. It needs courage, discipline and a good committee as there is no room for any corrections as there is no second day. Any trouble in the team, accident or disease and the effect counts double.

The catalogue is very good and complete, including statistics and even an overview with fill-in space for the results of the main ring. Unfortunately this is useless as no one tells the numbers , neither are they displayed on a screen or so. I still wonder why the public cannot be better informed. What use is it to buy a catalogue and follow the main ring if you don’t know who is in the ring. When judges are given a catalogue when the show is over there is no problem with objectivity, at least no more than it is the case now and when people pay to visit the show and follow the main ring they have the right to be better informed. A good judge is not influenced by only a name of a dog or handler, let stand a catalogue number. He is supposed to recognize quality and yes, it is absolutely normal that a judge recognizes handlers. This cannot be prevented by not telling the public what dog is in the ring. If a top dog is limping on a show, any judge can see that and will not make him BIS as the result of a show is a reflection of the condition of a dog on that certain day, whatever qualities he has if he is not limping. When will we have the first show in Belgium with a big digital screen in the main ring showing the number of the dog that is on term and offer the possibility to the public to follow the main ring program and giving him another raison to buy a catalogue.

32 Judges were invited, all European judges and only 5 of them were Belgians, an excellent balance for an International CACIB show. Mrs.Katarina Schweizer from Switzerland was the record holder of the show with no less than 112 entries. Her success has mainly to do with the huge number of Newfoundlanders (61!) and Bernese Mountaindogs (35). Mr. Friedrich Schweizer had also a nice score with 69 dogs. Her it were mainly the 43 Bulldogs who caused this success. A Spaniel special was held on this show and Mrs.Ann Webster from the UK was asked to take care of them. She had 76 dogs. Her compatriot Mrs.Caroline Gatheral did the Cavaliers and the King Spaniels together with the Dachshunds. She had 69 dogs in total. Mr.André Leblond from France judged part of group 9 breeds. Thanks to the 30 French Bulldogs he had a nice score with 76 dogs. Mr.Da Silva Zeferino from Portugal had also group 9 breeds and ended with 63 in his ring. The Terriers were divided between Mrs.Kealy Susan from Ireland who had 69, Mrs.Kathy Delmar, also from Ireland, with 49 dogs and Daniel Meeremans , Belgian judge, who had 23 Staffies and 38 Amstaffs to judge.

Mr.J.J.Dupas from France had the honor to judge BIS. During the day he judged group 6 and had the second highest score with 82 dogs. His 4th place went to the nice Scottish Terrier “Lucia’s Dream Stevie Wonderfull”, another top dog of this kennel. With only 2 ? years old Mrs.Smit-Kamerbeek from Holland can expect lots of successes in the future. Stevie Wonderfull was judged by Susan Kealy from Ireland . Mrs. Cathy Delmar, also Irish, made him later best of group.

Also from Holland was the Shar Pei “Jade East Catch me if You can”, an import from the States by Minne Esmae who ownes and handles him. Jade is 1 ? years only and already a Champion. He was judged by Mrs.Eva Borg from Sweden and Mr.Wieldraaijer from Holland made him Best of his Group.

Hannah di Mahanna is a product of the famous Belgian Whippet Kennel “Di Mahana” from Mrs. And Mr.Delabelle. This 1 ? year old bitch won the breed under Mr.Louis Dehaes from Belgium , the same judge that judged the group and increased Hannah’s chance to end up high in this show. That was finally pretty close to the Alaskan Malamute “Faruck of Gawaja’s spirit” as Mr. Dupas needed an extra round for those two before making Faruck his final overall winner. Mrs.Gwenaelle Guillaume was floating in the clouds when the final decision was announced and added another round leaping of joy. Faruck is a little more than 3 years now, a male, and entered in open class under Mr.Kim Nielsen from Denmark. Mr.Blaha from Austria, as the group 5 judge, opened the door for him to the BIS judging .

Two years we need to wait for the next edition of this unique show. I can already tell you the date: februari 26 2012. I wonder if one day we will need to put Gent on our calendar every year. In the past few years Belgium lost some shows like La Louvière and Brugge, a they don’t have no halls available any longer. This year we know that Charleroi will be cancelled and there will probably be no show next year in Namur. Perhaps Gent and Brugge can hold their show in the same hall alternatively every two years, share experience and give assistance, one year Die Scone and the next year Flanders Dog Show. Why not? If Gent has a show every year the chance to forget this show is smaller, both clubs will benefit from it.
