Since many years now the total number of entries for the two shows held in Luxemburg was increasing from year to year until over 5000 entries for the spring edition and 4065 in the autumn last year. But the crisis finally seems to have affected our dog shows too. For this Autumn edition the number of entries drew back to 3950, which is in my opinion still a very nice entry.

If we take a look at the number of nationalities it is obvious that the interest is still there and people only try to save money by just entering the dogs that have a chance of improving their status. 240 Breeds were represented and the dogs came from no less then 27 different countries, including a dog from Israel, one from Canada and one from the States. Russia is a regular client here. In the evening I even saw a special bus from a Russian tour operator specialized in dog shows. Russia was well represented that way with 39 dogs in competition. What we see more and more since the crisis struck us is that big Petfood companies no longer apply for Sponsorship. Luxemburg has no longer a main sponsor. I just wonder if they are not using the crisis as an excuse.

It means a lot of challenge for the committee members to face the crisis and try to convince the hesitating exhibitors to come to their show. But in Luxemburg they are champions in selecting the right judges and judges are aware of the generosity and hospitality and are happy to accept the invitation. For this edition no less than 35 judges were invited from 12 different countries and most of them had a lot of work to do. On Saturday 7 judges had over 100 dogs and on Sunday there were 3. It’s never easy to predict how much dogs will be entered for a judge and if there are really too many dogs for one judge, a part of it need to be judged by someone else. Of course exhibitors enter a dog under certain judges where they hope to make a fair chance of winning a title and that can depend on the type of dog. If then, at the very end it looks like your dog will be judged by another judge who is known for liking a completely different type of dog, you feel very frustrated and having wasted money if your dog has lost. On the other hand it is not a solution either if a judge has too many dogs to judge.

Marianne Holm from Finland was the record holder with no less then 127 dogs on Saturday. She judged shepherd breeds and had no less then 45 Briards to judge, 33 Beaucerons and 30 White Swiss Shepherds and a few other breeds. Jean François Vanaken from Belgium, came very close to her with 122 dogs also on Saturday. He had a fantastic number of 101 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and 21 King Charles Spaniels to judge. Both judges only judged one day. Very successful was Ben Karpel from Israel. He was invited to judge the French Bulldogs on Saturday and ended up with no less then 106! On Sunday he had the Bulldogs who were 61 all together. Paul Jentgen seems to become one of the most popular judges from Luxemburg. He had 111 dogs in his ring on Saturday, 27 of them were Czechoslovakian Wolfhounds. Ruth Wagner, also from Luxemburg had 93 dogs on Saturday all Spitz-like Breeds.Theo Leenen did another part of that group and had 104 dogs on Saturday, 32 chow-chows. On Sunday he had 87 dogs, all hunting breeds, including the BIS dog. Jochen Eberhardt from Germany is another judge who had a very high score on Saturday. 73 Rhodesian Ridgebacks and 34 Beagles brought him to a total score of 107. Hans Muller was asked as a stand-in and was originally not scheduled. He had a total of 99 dogs on Saturday, 66 Chinese Cresteds. On Sunday Svante Frisk from Sweden had 106 dogs in his ring, 24 Schnauzers and no less then 82 Zwergschnauzers. Paola Micara-Watten from Italy had 95 dogs, 5O of them were Cane Corso. Hans Van Den Berg judged the Newfoundlanders only and ended up with a very nice score of 79 specimen. Laurent Heinesche from Luxemburg shared the Dachshunds with Carmel Barry-Sheenan from Ireland. Mr.Heinesche had 118 to judge, Mrs Barry-Sheenan 75.

It was Mr.Norman Deschuymere from Belgium that had the honour of judging the Best In Show. Double D Cointreau Singe Star is a Pug from Spain, owned by Juan Jimenez & Christiane Koch and the choice of Mrs.Poala Micara-Watten for Best of Breed out 75. His judge for Best of Group was Mr.Hans Müller. Singel Star was entered in Champion class males about 2 1/2 years old. He was beaten by the American Staffordshire Terrier Thunder Bully Friendship also from Spain. He was judged by Mr.Boris Chapiro from France and had to compete with 54 other Amstaffs before he could move on to the Group judging by the very same judge. Thunder is a little over 2 years and was also entered in Champion Class. Edwin and Kristina Lenaerts have been breeding Weimaraners since many years including many champions. But winning Best In Show on such a prestigious and extremely international show is still a most exiting moment in their career. Nobiskrug Playing Allegro, their 4 year old champion did it again, finishing Best of Breed and Best of Group under Mr.Theo Leenen who judged both. Nobiskrug had a rather strong competition in his breed with 33 dogs all together. Weimaraners are no longer rare breeds and are pretty popular due to their lovely temperament and special colour that can vary from yellow over grey to bleu. As they are grey they just reflect the surrounding colour, Blue under a bright blue sky, Yellow in the evening sun and grey on cloudy days. We will see if it will be Nobiskrug himself or one of his kennelmates who will come back next spring. If you want to know it too, feel welcome on the 80th edition on 27 and 28 march next year.
