It is just amazing, but it looks like Luxembourg is not yet over it's top. While in 2003, 5 years ago only, the show had 3559 entries, it has this year no less then 5445 dogs, almost 200 more then last year. It is one of the smallest countries of Europe, but for dog-show-minded people it is one of the most wanted of the regular shows. Crufts, the biggest show in the world has only a little over 4 times the number of dogs in 4 days and has 33 countries, Luxembourg has 30 nations represented in only two days. It counts only about 400,000 people, while the UK has over 100 times more. Amazing!

France was best represented with 1535 dogs, followed by Germany with 1133 dogs. Belgium had 923 dogs and Holland had 679 entries for this edition. Guess who comes on the third place? Russia! With 198 entries! That is even more then Luxembourg itself (184) and Italy (170). One the reasons for the success is certainly the great hospitality of the organizing committee, not only towards the judges, but also towards the exhibitors and stand holders. They are working very efficient. Mr.and Mrs Schwab are the motors of the club and are known worldwide as they travel a lot for judging and for the FCI meetings, as they represent Luxembourg. The way the are able to compose a well balanced panel of judges is just amazing. Most of them judge on both days and are not overloaded or almost unemployed. Very few judges have more then 100 dogs/day and the average is around 75.

Mr.Paul Jentgen from Luxembourg was the record holder with 112 dogs on Sunday, Mr.Peter Lauber from Switzerland had 109 dogs on Saturday and did some Terrier breeds that day. Mrs.Maria Kalo from Hungary had 101 dogs, also judging terriers, the Yorkshires and the Scotties. The American Staffordshires needed to be divided between Istvan Nagy from Hungary and Piet Roosenboom from Belgium who did the males. Both had 77 specimen. Karin Buss from Germany had the Staffordshire Bull Terriers and ended up with 84. Mr. Kenneth Edh from Sweden had only the Miniature Schnauzers and ended with 105 dogs in his ring. Mr.Damir Skok, president of the Croatian Kennel Club, had 96 dogs of which 81 Great Danes and 15 Hovawarts. Mr.Joaquim Bernal-Herrer from Spain judged the 77 Rottweilers, a nice number, while Mr.Peter van Montfoord from Holland had 12 Landseers and 72 Newfoundlanders that he shared with Mr.Libuse Ubrova from the Czech Republik who had 78. As in most countries of Western Europe about the same kind of breeds are successful nowadays.

Sunday the Rhodesian Ridgebacks had to be split up between Mr.Gunnel Holm from Finland who had 40 males and Mr.Rasumé Kazlauskaite from Lithuania who had 53 bitches to judge. The same scenario for the Goldens; Mrs.Paolo Fontana from Italy had 66 males a,d %r.Damir Skok had 71 bitches. The Labradors were divided between Mr.Rui Oliveira From Portugal who had 50 males and Mr. Guy Kips, a starting judge from Luxembourg, who had the 51 bitches. Mrs.maria Louise Doppelreiter from Austria judged the male English Cockers (58) and Mrs;Elznieta Chwalibog from Poland had the 63 bitches. The American Cockers were all judged by one judge, Mrs Rita Kadike-Skadina from Lithouania, she ended up with 62 in her ring. And to finish, the 53 male Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were judged by Mr.Victor Alexander van Raamsdonk from Holland, while the females were judged by Mr.Peter van Montfoort who had the 59 females. Mrs; Hélène Denis from France had another popular breed which she judged all by herself, the French Bulldogs. She had a nice score of 75 dogs.

It would bring me much too far to analyse all the other judges and breeds, but it is obvious, as I stated before, that all judges had enough to do on both days and they were very well chose,. There is no doubt that a well balanced choice is of utmost importance for the success of a show and the committee is playing this game in master class! Choosing 48 judges from as much different countries as possible (20 countries!), while keeping the budget in balance, si certainly a most difficult job.

Mr. Javier Sanchez Fernandez from Spain was invited to judge BIS this time and without any doubt, he was really honoured with this job. Amongst the Group winning dogs were a few that really belonged to the top of the European Dogs. It was not easy to make a well-considered choice. His third place went to the Newfoundland “Skipper's Emperior King of Helluland”, res BOG at Crufts and winner of the European Dog Show in Helsinki, Skipper is owned by Béla Siklosi Gàabor Maroti from Hungary.

Res.BIS went to the Maltese bitch “Shiawandi Immaculatta”. Chiawandi belongs to Encarna & Martinez Santiago from Spain.

Chris Mc Lean from Italy is the owner of the American Akita bitch “Melodor Burn the Witch” who was chosen as Best In Show. This is another victory for this famous kennel who has bred many champions and a worthy winner for this edition. All 3 dogs were very nice and real topdogs.

On 6 and 7 September will be the Luxembourg Autumn edition. I have no doubt that this edition will pass the number of 4000 entries. Take care you are present and that your dog is in top condition as the competition will be tough!
