par Kiriakos KontadakisA very interesting and useful weekend was organized by the Spanish Club for the Mastiff-type Breeds, the Club Espanol de los Molosos de Arena (CEMA) on the 23rd-24th of June in Valladolid in north-central Spain. Valladolid, the capital of the province of Valladolid and of the autonomous community of Castile and Leon, a part of the historical region of Castile, has given hospitality to the molosser-fans and a Club that has celebrated its 25th Anniversary, with a conference (Saturday the 23rd) and a Speciality Show (Sunday the 24th of June).
The board of CEMA has invited some very well known mastiff-experts as conference speakers and judges for the second day.
So, we had Mrs. Pamela James Brown from the UK, judge and bullmastiff breeder, who has held a lecture on the Typology and Standard of the Bullmastiff.
Next VIG (Very Important Guest!!) of CEMA was Mr. Giuseppe Alessandra (Italy). The worldwide famous mastino expert, President of the International Technical Association for the Neapolitan Mastiff (Associazione Tecnica Internazionale Mastino Napoletano or A.T.I.MA.NA.) is one of the most important persons of the breed in the world. He has judged in the annual “Trofeo A.T.I.MA.NA.” in several occasions (1991, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006) and he has spoken about the “Typology and Standard of the Mastino Napoletano”.
For the Fila Brasileiro fans-breeders-owners….for the Fila team of Spain, CEMA has invited Mr. Crist?v?o Giancotti (Tabayara kennel – Minas Gerais), from the homeland of the breed, the place where the old bloodlines still exist, the motherland of the true, athletic Fila, a breed quite rare..or not so rare, a breed that is in danger, due to the fact that many breeders follow the famous: the heavier – the better, the larger – the better. They forget how the Fila has developed, they added too much Mastiff, Mastino Napoletano and Great Dane, and that’s the “Fila” now. Fortunately, the true Fila still exists, and more and more people start to learn and understand. Probably the breed is in a good way now….
Mr. Giancotti held a lecture about the Fila Brasileiro, analyzed the standard with the support of many photos, and spent several hours with the fileiros analyzing specimens “live”. A great opportunity to learn, a rare opportunity, because Brasil is far for us Europeans………………………….
On Sunday, there were four rings prepared, For Mrs. James Brown (Bullmastiff), Mr. Alessandra (Mastino Napoletano), and the three Spanish judges of the XV Concurso Monografico on the fields of the Tennis Club de Campo La Galera.
The Spanish judge team included Mr. Jos? Salvador Martinez, (El Siledin kennel – Fila Brasileiro), Mr. Aureliano Monguilot Ruiz, Vice President of CEMA (Dogue De Bordeaux) and Mr. Jos? Manuel Castillo Aliaga (Mastiff).
There were 39 Bullmastiffs, 14 Dogues De Bordeaux (a tremendously low number for the breed in a special show), 21 Mastini (but of very high quality), no Tosas, 1 English Mastiff and 14 Filas Brasileiros.
In the ring of Mr. Martinez we could see some very typical specimens, Like Waimiri Del Siledin, still a baby, but a very very promising one, full of type and substance, son of Quibira Dos Tabayara . His mother Nimbuia Dos Tabayara was also there (Res. Best Bitch). There were also exhibitors from Portugal as well. Best Bitch and Best of Breed was CH. Jany De Torrecata (Owned by the La Tejera kennel).
In the ring of Mr. Alessandra there were several Italian bred mastini, and of course Spanish bred too, like the magnificent bitch ATIMANA winner 2006 Ch. Guardia Pretoriana De Roma Mastines De Lecea who lost the Best Bitch title by the beautiful Beatrice Di Fondo Anfossi. Bea was Best of Breed and later Best in Show. The mastino ring was the most crowdie one, with all mastino fans, and Mr. Alessandra was explaining everything loudly. Spain, as we know, has organized several ATIMANA Championship Shows, with excellent results (1997 in Banyoles, 2003 in Seva, and last year as well)
Mrs. James Brown had some very nice dogs to judge, some excellent British bullmastiff heads, her Best of Breed was Marcelina De Tras la Luna, a typical bitch from the Open Class.
In the Dogue De Bordeaux ring, Mr. Ruiz has chosen Satsuma de el Siscar from the Junior Class, son of Bakervills Style Vasco, littermate brother of Bakervill's Style Viski who was European Winner this year in Zagreb.
The one and only Mastiff specimen was Best of Breed as well, judged by Mr. Aliaga and it was Virgilie De La Louvagerie, a male from the Open Class.
Later at the finals, Best Baby in Show was the female Mastino Napoletano Artemisa, daughter of Manuelito Dello Stradone – also presented - and Kaliope De Los Gladiadores De Arena (Breeder - Owner. E. Diaz Mu?oz) and Best Puppy in Show a female Dogue De Bordeaux Samba De El Siscar, out of Smokin Joe and CH. Odile De El Siscar (Breeder - Owner.: J. S?nchez Pardo).
Best Junior in Show was Nemo De Azzurra son of CH. Nemo Del Castellaccio from Italy (imported in Spain) who’s sire, was Bobo Dello Stradone, son of the legendary Brigante Del Castellaccio.
The top dog in the Show was the wonderful in substance and type female Mastino Napoletano Beatrice Di Fondo Anfossi bred by Mr. Nicoletti owned by Mr. E. Diaz Mu?oz. You can admire her in the photos of this reportage. Powerful bitch, with correct head and body proportions, strong bones and chest and sound typical feline like mastino movement
It was a weekend full of nice experiences, interesting opinions, useful knowledge about these wonderful breeds. They are all old, historical, and under attack nowadays. Attacked by some people who think that banning them, the sad occasions of bites and wounds will disappear. No. Every dog can bite. A Cocker Spaniel (sorry Cocker) can seriously wound a hand. A Borzoi, a Poodle, a German Shepherd, a Komondor…many terrier breeds can all bite. Not only a few breeds. So ban the violence, the aggressive people and not the dogs. Some of them have several hundreds and even thousands of years history. We have no right to ban these living monuments of the human history…….
