Only one week after the biggest World Dog Show ever in Poznan, it was a surprise that the show of Kortrijk was so successful with an increase of over 200 dogs. While 2004 was good for a little over 2400 dogs, this year’s edition was close to 3000 dogs, 2838 to be exact. This concerns only the number of dogs in competition for the show, as besides this, there are the competitors for the international Agility competition, Obedience, and the several demonstrations to entertain the public, resulting all together in 3700 dogs over two days.
Kortrijk has set an example on the continent on how to organise a dogshow as a total concept. It has numerous trade stands, big rings and a lot of entertainment. There is Junior- and Seniorhandling, Fly-ball, demonstrations with hunting dogs, Guide dogs, Defence, Duck herding, Doggy Dance and for the children, the famous Fancy Dress competition. It also has a real “Children’s Village” where children can play, be made-up, or be entertained by a clown or just participate at the drawing competition. In fact one can state that the Eurodogshow
of Kortrijk is the most smoothly ran show in Europe, offering value for money to the visitors.
64 Judges (41 for the Show itself) were invited and they came from 20 different countries, with a special focus on the Central European countries and the Scandinavian countries. This is just amazing and proofs again the high quality standard of this show.
A speciality was held for the Japanese Breeds, judged by Mr.Teruyoshi Sugara from Japan. He had 88 dogs on Saturday and judged Cockers and Terriers on Sunday.
Only 4 national judges officiated, while special attention was paid to the Central European judges who seem to be very popular lately. But there were also two judges invited from the USA. Like Mrs. Barbara Ann Brooks who had 77 entries on Saturday (all belonging to group 5) and no less then 87 dogs on Sunday (group I) of which 44 Australian Shepherds. Mrs. Roberta Campbell, also from the US, had 31 Beagles to judge on Saturday and seemed to be very popular on Sunday with a very nice entry of 70 American Staffordshire Terriers. From the UK Mr. Terry Thorn was invited along with Mrs.Lucy Koster, Mrs. Jacqui Hurley , Mr.Jimmy Tait and Mr.John Rawlings. Except for Mr. Thorn, all other UK judges seemed specialised in one breed. Mrs.Hurley did all the Poodle Varieties resulting in 63 entries. Mr.Tait had all the Collies, rough and smooth, good for 40 entries. Miss. Koster had 52 Cavalier King Charles to judge and Mr.Rawling did the Bull Terriers, including the Miniatures, ending up with 41. Mr. Thorn had a very busy Saturday with 31 Shih Tzu’s and 53 Chihuahuas. Sunday was a little more relaxing during the day judging the Beardies and Bobtails, 48 all together. But besides that, he was the special guest for judging the BIS.
Mr.Paul Lawless from Ireland was invited to judge the Mastiff and Bullmastif on Saturday and the Belgian Shepherds on Sunday. Mrs.Ann Van Den Heuvel-Cowan, also from Ireland, was only judging on Saturday and was especially invited to judge a nice entry of 49 Bulldogs.
Mr.Nenad Davidovic from Yuguslavia, had 51 dogs to judge on Saturday, all group 9 breeds, but was remarkably successful on Sunday with the record breed of the show, the Golden Retrievers. He had no less then 84 in his ring! Mr.Miroslav Zidar, from Slovenia, was the judge for the Labrador Retrievers and was busy with his 53 entries on Sunday.
Mrs.Ilona Ostenk-Schenk from Holland had 51 Great Danes on Saturday , Mr.Harry Meister from Switserland was reserved for the 47 Rottweilers. Mr.Demierbe had 29 Boxers, which is very good from our country. 61 Newfoundlanders and 4 Landseers was the score for Mrs.Utke-Ramsing from Denmark. Also from Denmakr was Mr. Svend Lovenkjaer, invited to judge all the Schnauzers, 56 in total. Mrs.Uschi Eisner from Austria had all the Sennenhunden, 62 all together of which 53 Berneses. Another nice score are the 48 Afgan Hounds and 17 Irish Wolfhounds for Mrs.Irina Korshunova from Russia. Mrs.Natasa Davidovic from Yuguslavia judged the Weimaraner Club Specialty . Of her 34 specimen she choosed Ch. Unity Grey Classic's Double Trouble owned by E.Lenaerts as BOB. This dog also won the Group 7.
It would really bring me too far to name all the other judges in detail. The fact that all judges had good scores, without being overloaded, and the high total entry for the show, proves that the committee has build up experience for many years in setting up a reputed and successful dogshow.
The fact that 1475 dogs were Belgian dogs proves that it is still the number one show for the Belgian exhibitors. Some other International Shows in our country have fewer entries all together and one can state that probably all serious exhibitors put this show on their agenda every year. As Kortrijk is close to the border of France, it is no surprise that France is coming second with a total entry of 598 dogs. The Netherlands delegated no less then 363 entries. Is it surprising or not that the UK comes on the fourth place with 145 entries, surpassing Germany who had 123? I guess not. The Eurodogshow of Kortrijk is not only a prestigious show but the close ties with the UK and the many efforts of the committee since years to encourage the British to come over to show their dogs seems to bear fruit. It is now probably getting known in the USA and Canada too, as there were two and one entries respectively.
BIS went to the Basset Griffon Vendéen “Bassbarr Hermitage” from Gwen Huikenshove, the very same dog that won its group a week earlier in Poznan during the World Dog Show.
He was wade BOB by Mr.Niels Brandstrup from Norway who made him also Best of Group 6 later that day. Second was the Siberian Husky “Chefornak’s Diddlina, owned by Guillaume Gwennaëlle from Belgium, chosen by Mrs. Barbara An Brooks and made group 5 winner by Dr.Marina Guidetti from Italy. And the 3th place went to the Bobtail “Ch. Zottel's Gi'me Five” from Bailey Christina from the UK. Zottel was a BOB of Mr.Thorn and made BOG by Dr.Otto Schimpf from Austria.
With no influence of a World Dog Show a week before, I wonder if this show could not have beaten its own record from 1991 with over 3000 entries. We will see next year on 17 and 18 november, same place, same time, and along with some 30.000 visitors!
