Austrian victory in Luxembourg. (This report has almost 2200 photos !!!!) Important information for BOB winners (free photo vouchers) follows under this article. The September edition of this fabulous and very popular show never attracts as many entries as the spring edition. Is hard to tell what

the reason could be for this phenomena. The same applies to the trade stands, although there are many as usual. But let’s not forget that the

popularity for this edition has now surpassed the popularity of the spring editions of 5 to 10 years ago. That means that both editions have

grown spectacularly. This edition had an entry of 3486 dogs out of 26 different countries and composed of 254 different breeds. Impressive records!

No less the 36 judges coming from as much as 16 different countries had the difficult task to have all those subjects correctly judges in a strict time schedule.

The weather was nice and even warm and in the afternoon it was pretty warm inside, even with the gates open. But it was never uncomfortable. Since

the spring edition of this year Luxembourg has the most beautiful podium and has now a new carpet offered by the main sponsor Eukanuba. One minor thing was the floor that probably was re-polished and very slipping. This gives an advantage to the judges as a dog that is of good temperament and in nice balance will hardly have any problems with it. In fact it gives a good idea to the judge of what kind of subject he has. On the other hand it is possible that a nice well-balanced dog that once had a serious problem with slipping was since then traumatised and spoiled forever, and doesn’t present himself on a slipping floor.

It is also a pleasure to see Mr.Schwab doing the comments and mixing everything up with some nice music. He seems to enjoy it and I must admit that his choice of music adds to the overall pleasant atmosphere. Luxembourg has something unconventional and relaxing and at the same time a very professional look.

It is hard to tell what the secret of this formula is, but it seems that everybody enjoys it, the handlers, the dogs, the public, the judges and the committee itself.

Nobody seems to be in a rush, nobody is shouting or running, everybody says hello. It is amazing and looks like magic. Once factor, for sure, are the halls. They are big, spacious and with good acoustic qualities. But the committee itself seems so relaxed and they probably reflect their own attitude on the exhibitors.

It is a fact that when one person starts to run or shout or rush, everybody starts to do so and as this is not the case here, it is probably one of the ingredients of the magic elixir.

Luxembourg is a qualifying show for Crufts and that adds of course to the international success of the show. Most numerous were the French with 1067 entries, followed by Germany with 760, Belgium with 652 and the Netherlands with 479. Luxembourg had 168 entries and this means that the remaining 360 dogs represent 21 countries. This time only 14 dogs were entered from the UK and 2 from USA.

As Luxembourg has probably the best collection of dog breeds to show it is no wonder that you have a good chance of seeing some very rare breeds and/or a newly recognised breed. That was the case this time with the Romanian Shepherd or Mioritza, a breed that was recognised by the occasion of the latest World Dog Show in Argentina in June. A lovely breed it seems. It is a big dog with a long tough, water-repellent coat. It has the size of a Briard but the head makes me think more on a Nizinny. If you want to see photos of the breed, click on the photo on top of this article (www.123dog.net) and choose in the next screen on “see the pictures” . In the right top corner of the next screen there is a “Quick Search”button. Click on it and scroll down the list until you find the breed.

Some breeds have nice entries, mostly they belong to the popular breeds. Mrs. Marianne Walker from Hungary had 68 Dobermans to judge. Mrs.Margit Brenner from Austria had 61 Rottweilers on Saturday and 47 Rhodesian Ridgebacks on Sunday. Heidi Kirschbichler, also from Austria, must have been pleased with her 78 American Staffordshires, 60 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and 23 King Charles Spaniels. 62 Afgan Hounds were entered to have the opinion of Mrs.Marija Kavcic from Slovenia. From Italy Mr.Giulio Bezzecchi was invited to give his quote on 82 English Cocker Spaniels. Michael Hughes-Halls from the UK had a good entry of 53 Golden Retrievers. The Labradors had the very same number of entries for Mr.Marino Giudette from Italy. And Mrs. Evelyne Desquartiers must have a very good reputation in judging Pug as he had no less then 63 subjects. The Teckels (Dachshunds) were numerous (137 !) and divided between Mr.Nora Price from the UK and Mrs.Elisabeth Gonzales from Gibraltar. 134 Poodles was also to much for one judge and therefore devided between Mrs.Steffi Kirschbichler (mother of Heidi) from Austria and Istvan Csik from Hungary. Top scoring judges this weekend were Mr.Walsh from Ireland on Saturday with 100 entries belonging to group II. On Sunday Mr.Blaz Bavcic from Slovenia had 125 entries from group I, followed by 114 dogs for Mrs. Elisabeth Gonzales from Gibraltar and Mr.Giulio Bezzecchi from Italy with 107 Spaniels.

More and more it is common sight that top dogs are presented by professional handlers. This certainly applies for Luxembourg and from what I have seen in the main ring it must have been very difficult for the judges to make a choice. The honour of judging BIS was granted to Mr.Hans Van den Bergh from Holland. His final choice was the magnificent Great Japanese Dog “Melodor Catch Me If You Can” from Thoma Gabriele from Austria. The dog was handled by Ante Lucin from Croatia to the perfect. “Tyger des Tip Top Terriers” was his runner up. This Fox Terrier (wire) is owned by Carré Martial from France. A nice surprise was certainly the 3th place going to a breed that is rarely seen in this area, a Gos d’Atura Catalan. “Malcovitch de Valdegoscan” is owned by Cagigao & Abraham Toledano Victoria from Spain.

If you want to experience the warm atmosphere of Luxembourg as a visitor or exhibitor then write down in your agenda the date of the next spring edition held on 25 and 26 september and surf to www.uchl.lu to download an entry form. See you there!
