Luxemburg Show combines FCI Board meeting
It was a good idea to combine a big show and a FCI general meeting. It offers the possibility to have some interesting judges at the show, judges that would otherwise be too expensive to invite, like the judges from Asia and South America. For those judges it is also very important to judge regularly breeds of continental and more original types, compared to the American types. Besides that they have the possibility to see and judge breeds that you will hardly ever see on shows in South America or Asia.
South American and Asian judges are much more often invited to judge in the USA although they are within the FCI system. If they are not able to judge the European Breeds on a regular basis, the possibility exists that they lose sight of the continental types like we know them in Europe. I remember clearly the World Shows in Mexico, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. Certain breeds tended to deviate seriously from the original standard. Not that the FCI countries have the best dogs, but in certain breeds the difference is really dramatically big, like in the Setters and the Golden Retrievers for example. It must be avoided that we lose the original, old types in our dogs. Now that travelling became much easier and cheaper it must be stimulated to invite these judges whenever possible.
For these judges the show of Luxemburg must be a most fantastic experience. The Luxemburg hospitality is famous and being invited to a regular show with double as much dogs as on a World Show in the Americas, must be an honor for these judges. Again there was an increase in entries, although negligible. There were 5487 dogs in competition on the show, 256 different breeds and coming from 32 different countries. Again France is leading with 1558 dogs, followed by Germany with 1157, then by Belgium with 980 dogs and Holland with 700 dogs. There are as much dogs from Belgium entered here on this show as there were entered for the Liège Dog Show! Russian exhibitors are very fond of Luxemburg, no less than 93 dogs were entered. But there were also dogs entered from as far a Israel, the States, Iceland and Japan.
The catalogue is really a pleasure to consult! It holds some handsome statistics and gives a nice overview of who judges where, what and how many etc. Results are immediately available via the website and you get the impression that everything is running as if running a Dog Show is the most common thing in the world. 49 Judges were here to help bringing this show to another good end. They came from 21 different countries and from as far as Argentina and Costa Rica.
Mr.Alfonso Thovar Y Del Solar from Spain had 96 dogs in his ring on Saturday. He had the highest score that day. Mr.John Burrows from the UK had 74 Newfoundlanders to judge, males only, the females (48) were for Mr.Bernard Metraux from Switzerland. Mr.Paul Baelen from Belgium had also a good entry with 84 dogs, 45 of them were Bordeaux dogs, a breed to become more and more popular. Mr.Uwe Fischer from Germany had a surprising good entry of 78 boxers. The Amstaffs were divided between MR.Iuza Beradze from Georgia and Mr.Peter Harsanyi from Hungary and numbered 99 in total. A very high score since long is the one of the Afgan hounds. Mr.Rafael de Santiago from Puerto Rico had no less than 76 to judge! It would really lead me too far to go into detail for every judge as a lot of them had over 75 dogs. Interesting is from the 2604 dogs of Saturday, 1210 belonged to group 2. On Sunday it was group 9 (Companion dogs) who had the highest number of entries with 954 dogs, more than group 1, the Shepherd Breeds, who had only 738 dogs. Several judges had over 90 dogs, like Mr.Hans Müller, president of the FCI and from Switzerland, who no less than 60 Briards and his compatriot with the very same family name, Mrs.Barbara Muller, who had 97 in total. She did all the Australian Shepherd breeds and had 62 Australian Shepherds. The highest score of the show was for Mr.Norman Deschuymere from Belgium. With 114 dogs in his ring he knew what to do that day. It was remarkable that no less than 68 White Swiss Shepherds turned up to be judged by him. Mr.Peter Harsanyi from Hungary had 94 dogs, all belonging to group 5. A Kishu and a Shikoku, two of the most rare breeds in the world, joined his party. In this group Mrs Marija Kavcic from Slovenia and Mrs.Martha Heine from Germany also had high scores, 103 and 98 respectively.
Mr. Kari Jarvinen from Finland had only one breed to judge, the Rhodesian Ridgebacks. With 102 specimen he holds the record one judge, one breed. Mr.Joseph Van Hummelen from Belgium came close with his 96 French Bulldogs. Most popular breed of the show were the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. They were all judged by the Puerto Rican judges, Mr. Rafael de Santiago who did the 59 males, and Mr. Roberto Velo Pico who had the 57 bitches. The Golden Retrievers are usually more numerous on shows than the Labradors, but this time the Labradors outnumbered the Goldens, with 109 to 104. Mr.Miguel Angel Martinez from Argentina, president of the Argentina Kennel Club, had been busy with 88 Pugs (and 3 Kromfohrländers) to judge but was still fit enough to judge Best In Show. His 3th BIS went to the American Cocker Spaniel “Brickett N Carte It’s Beyond Me” , an import from the USA, bred by Carol Zielinski. This 3 year old bitch was entered in Champions Class by Jessica & Barbara Brickett who live in Belgium. Judge Carmen Gil Polo from Spain made her Best of Breed and Mr.Karl Reisinger from Austria promoted him to Best of Group 8. Mr.Martinez was happy that his Best of Breed Pug was made Best of Group 9 by Mr. Roberto Velo Pico from Puerto Rico, so that he could promote his to Res.BIS. “Los Chatos del Turia I hate Mondays” is a 3 year old dog, bred in Spain by Ferrer Dobon Blanca who still owns the dog. Los Chatos was entered in Champion Class too. The Supreme honor went to the Afgan Hound “Kouros Vita Spericolata” . Kouros is bred in Italy where he still lives with his master Maria Cristina Leonardi. He is 5 years and was entered in Champion Class too. He won from strong competition under judge Rafael De Santiago from Puerto Rico who judged the group too and made him Best of Group 10. I like it when a BIS show dog has had a strong competition in his breed.
Again it was a very nice and smooth show. It looks like the only problem the committee of Luxemburg can have is too many dogs and lack of space. But even this seems no problem for them, there is never a sign of panic, not even a sign of nervousness in the committee. Enter in September (5 & 6) or next year (27&28 March) to challenge them and see how far they can go. I want to know, I want o know!!!!!
