Brussels 2006  -  Belgium

dogs breeders dog pictures by Karl Donvil
Brussel 2006 in almost 2000 photo's ! (ordering photos assistance see below article / commander des photos: voir en dessous de l'article / foto's bestellen zie onderaan artikel / bilder bestellen: lesen sie unten das artikel) There has been no dogshow in Brussels since December 2004. This was because the committee of the Belgian Royal Club St-Hubertus had a rather turbulent year. Almost the whole committee has changed and no reservations for the Heizel Palaces were made by the old committee. That was an opportunity for the new committee to change the date again to summertime instead of midwinter season.

If this was a good choice or not, is hard to tell.

Anyway that is why 2005 did not have a Brussels Dogshow. The season may have certain advantages and save a lot on heating, but only two weekends before there was the European Winner in Helsinki and the weekend before, at less then 300km there was the big show of Paris. As if this was not enough, there was the very same weekend as Brussels also a show at Chartres in France, Brno (Cech Rep.) and in Lissabon (Portugal). All this affects on the total entry of course. While 2004 had a nice entry of 2878, 2006 had only 2360 dogs for its 110th edition.

23 Countries were represented, which is a nice spread. Compared to other shows, Switzerland was well represented with 30 dogs, as was Sweden with 21 dogs. Russia had only 14 entries and the UK had 32. Two dogs came from Ukraine and even two from “Ile de Réunion”!

Brussels Dogshow had an unusually high score of different breeds and varieties. 262 Breeds offers an interesting aspect for the visitors. The average number on CACIB shows is 220.

There were no really rare breeds in fact, most of them were already shown in Belgium, but it is rare to see so many all together in one show. Even the Shikoku, one of the rarest breeds in the world and originating from Japan, has been spotted in our areas as the breeder lives in Holland. The Brussels Dogshow was a Crufts Qualifying show.

All those dogs have been judged by 33 different breeders coming from 16 different countries.

Belgium had 9 judges, some of them giving a CACIB for the first time in a breed. Brussels usually gives them the opportunity to judge a new breed for the first time at their show.

Top scores were by Seloy Birgit from Denmark with 110 dogs on Saturday and 87 on Sunday.

Miroslaw Predlicky from Poland had also a very nice entry with 93 dogs on Saturday and 39 on Sunday. Monique van Brempt, one of Belgium’s most popular judges, only officiated on Saturday, but had a very good entry of 96 dogs, while another of our popular judges, Mr.Deschuymere had 77 on Sunday, the only day that he judged. Mrs. Dewilde, wife of our Allrounder Mr.Dewilde, had 42 Bulldogs on Sunday. Her husband was the Best In Show judge. Avi Marshak from Israel had only 27 dogs on Saturday, but 83 on Sunday. Adrian Griffa from italy had on Saturday 78 Poodles and 45 Newfoudnlanders, a nice entry, probably as she is also a famous breeder of Newfies. Andres Shemel from Austria had 48 Chihuahua’s and 37 French Bulldogs on Saturday. On Sunday he was busy with 48 American Staffordshires. Mrs;Tarjan from Hungary had Group 9 breeds on Saturday. Of the 89, 45 were Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. On Sunday he had her hands full with 107 dogs, all from the Terrier Group. Two British judges had also remarkable scores on Sunday. Mrs.patsy Hollings had 84 dogs of which no less then 34 Irish Terriers and 27 Flat Coateds. Mr.B.Catterall had 59 Golden Retrievers.

This show is Belgium’s National Dog Show and has always a Working Class judging in the main ring. Dogs can qualify here for the CACIT which is the ticket for dogs which is required to become National Champion in certain breeds or for the qualification of Working Champion. Runner up Best in Show went to the Lagotto Romagnolo “Ch. Tempesta” owned by Kalecak-Bajrakstarevic-Lucin from Croatia. This dog has an impressove list of victories all over Europe. Boris Wiesen is an upcoming talent in Junior Handling. Not only did he win the Junior Handling competition on Saturday, but he was also handling the Best In Show dog, the Pomeranian “Lake Buena Vista Wind” owned by Genot Paulette from Belgium. The poor guy was so overwhelmed that he did burst out in tears of joy. It was really touching to see him kiss his dog and wiping away his tears before positioning the dog for the photo session. Amazing how skilful he is. He will certainly have a bright future as a handler. The Pomeranian is bred in Brazil in the famous Lake Buena Vista Kennel. This Kennel has bred numerous Champions and World Champions. No wonder that little “Wind” had no problem to start setting stamps on the Belgian Walk of Fame at the Brussels Dog Show.
