Battle of the Poodles  -  Israel

dogs breeders dog pictures by Yossi Guy
When Czech white Standard Poodle, multi-ch. Federikofellini Marko Bohemica, arrived at the show venue at Kibbutz Givat Haim, most participants and onlookers believed he would easily take the top spot at the Poodle Club show judge by Mr. George Kostopulos of Greece. The judge, however, had a mind of his own and put up miniature black bitch, Int. & Isr. Ch. Jitana Lady Viktoria, handled by owner Nicole Bennet.

"The overall quality of poodles was very good and up to a high standard," summed up Mr. Kostopulos, "as well as coat presentation and grooming. I would say almost all poodles were of excellent show quality and presentation. The blacks were generally stronger."

BIS was Miniature Black Int. & Isr. Ch. Jitana Lady Viktoria, owned Nicole Bennet.

Says the judge: "the BIS was a black miniature bitch. I thought she really had everything – size, breed type, proportions, absolutely sound movement from all sides and correct and proud tail carriage and coat."

The reserve BIS was a magnificent white standard, a visitor from the Czech Republic, Multi Ch. Federikofellini Marko Bohemica, who had flown over especially for the show with breeder & owner Eva Markovo. From the ringside, he seemed like a sure winner, but took second place to the black miniature bitch.

"A really high class dog in every respect with a wonderful head, good pigment and coat in texture, density, elasticity and grooming," noted the judge. "A real showman in temperament. However, I would prefer better front and rear angles. Unfortunately in his case, although sometimes if the angles are balanced you get good movement, but here they were expressed in movement, thereby giving the black bitch the advantage."

When the poodle show ended, the judge continued to judge the Israeli Sighthound Club show in the same ring. The show ended the day with an interesting entry, made up of some 20 Salukis, some actually shown by Bedouins, about 15 Whippets and small entries in other breeds.

"Judging the Salukis was an experience for me because this was the first time I judged desert Salukis and their offspring," pointed out Mr. Kostopulos. "They were a challenging to judge because I am not familiar with this type. My best male was a dog owned by a Bedouin out of a desert mother but sired by a Scandinavian import. My BOB was bred out of two imports."

As a Whippet breeder, the judge looked forward to judging this breed in Israel. "I loved both my winners in the Whippet, they both represent the type I like," he said. "I also loved my best puppy in the breed and the show and was happy to hear he had been sired by a male I had bred and exported to Israel. The rest of the Whippet entry was mixed and not really of the type I prefer."

BIS was awarded to an Azawakh, Ch. Dyallan (Tigidit), imported from Italy by Dr. Zachi Nevo. "I liked it very much in every respect," the judge elaborated. "Excellent body substance, elegance and breed type, excellent movement and temperament. The runner up Saluki (Ch. Spector el Razal Dakika, breeder and owner Shay Spector) had everything, but I would have liked to see it in better condition, however it was a superb example of the breed."

"Dyallan comes from a renowned French kennel from his dam's side and his sire was imported directly from Mali, the source of the breed, by Italian breeder Alberto Rossi," says owner Dr. Zachi Nevo. Dr. Nevo received the dog when he was 11 months old and describes the dog as having a complex personality. "Dyallan is extremely athletic, easily jumps over 2.5m high fences. He loves women and will gladly go with any woman than with his male owner. As a very quiet, easy-going dog, he has served as a "model" at various conferences. Out of doors, however, he does not let anyone get near him, and at home he is a fantastic guard."

Dyallan has sired two litters of excellent quality, has finished his Israeli championship, and in the previous Sighthound show his daughter went BOB under Mrs. Rena Menashe.

The judge was impressed by the junior handlers. Mr. Kostopulos noted "they would certainly find their way to the podium if they come to shows in Greece."

Mr. Kostopulos: "the show organization was excellent. Compared to shows in Greece I saw better handling in Israel. I got the impression that there was a plan of hospitality, they put effort and thought into my stay here and that was a very nice feeling. It was my first time in Israel. I enjoyed my visit to the Bedouins with my host, Dr. Zafra Sirik, president of the Sighthound Club, to see the original Saluki in its natural habitat. I was very well received by them, was offered tea and we sat on rugs and pillows in the traditional way, which was very exciting."
